AMERICUS - The Georgia Southwestern women's soccer team had five players receive Peach Belt Conference All-Academic honors as announced by the league office on Wednesday afternoon.
Gabby Buck, a first team selection, appeared in all 17 matches and started nine for the Lady Hurricanes in 2010, her first year with the program. The junior defender from Fayetteville logged 844 minutes of playing time. A two-sport athlete, Buck has been a softball Second Team All-Conference selection each of her first two seasons with GSW. She is an Early Childhood Education major.
Katie Mueller joined Buck as a first team soccer selection. Mueller appeared in 16 matches in the backfield for GSW. The Tallahassee, Fla. native took two shots on goal. Another two-sport athlete, Mueller is an Early Childhood Education major and will take to the diamond for the Southwestern softball team this spring.
Ally Canganelli received an honorable mention after starting all 17 matches in 2010 and finishing fourth on team with 1382 minutes on the pitch as a defender for Southwestern. Canganelli, a sophomore Nursing major from Buford, had one goal this fall and finished tied for sixth on the team with two points.
Heather Hodge, one of only two seniors on the squad, played in 13 matches for the Lady Hurricanes this season and received an honorable mention. A Middle School Education major, Hodge finished with one shot on goal in her lone season with the program. The third two-sport athlete, she will return to the diamond for GSW head softball coach Eddie Ward this spring.
Brittney Hill, a junior midfielder from Warner Robins, started 16 matches as a midfielder for the Lady Hurricanes this season to receive an honorable mention. She tied for third on the team with two goals and tied for second with seven points. Her three assists ranked second on the squad. The Exercise Science major led Southwestern with two game-winning scores.
The team is part of a season-long program recognizing the outstanding accomplishments of PBC student-athletes in the classroom as well as on the field.
To be eligible for the All-Academic team, a student-athlete must 1) participate in at least half of his/her team’s events and be either a starter or significant contributor; 2) achieved a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) and 3) completed at least one full academic year at his or her current institution. The Peach Belt Conference Sports Information Directors oversee and select the teams.
