A Night of Firsts in 2-1 Win

CARROLLTON - Friday evening provided a wealth of "firsts" for the Georgia Southwestern women's soccer program in a 2-1 victory over West Georgia at University Soccer Field.

Coach Samantha Snow picked up her first win - in her first match - at the helm for the Lady Hurricanes. Freshman Mallory Hawkes scored her first collegiate goal and added her first assist. GSW earned its first win over the Wolves in four tries.

The victory didn't come without some early struggles as UWG was the aggessor in the opening minutes taking a 1-0 lead at the 17:50 mark when Mariela Ortega scored off of an assist from Anna Cusick.

The Wolves lead did not last long. Hawkes penetrated the UWG defense to punch through her goal in the 24th minute to even the score at 1-1.

Junior Julia Wells drilled what would prove to be the game-winning goal less than five minutes later off an assist from Hawkes.

The second half turned into a defensive stalemate as the two sides were held scoreless. GSW kept the Wolves out of prime scoring position as Lady 'Canes senior goalkeeper Amber Bahri made her last save of the match with over 23 minutes left to play. UWG had one final look in the 79th minute when a shot from Rebecca Uranga hit the post.

UWG finished with a slim 5-4 advantage in shots on goal while holding a 7-2 lead in corner kicks.

Bahri stopped four shots for GSW. Mary Laza saved two for UWG.

The Lady Hurricanes look to make it two in a row on Sunday when they host Limestone College at 3 p.m.
