AMERICUS - A five and a half minute span in the first half where the UNC Pembroke women's soccer team scored both of their goals would prove to be the difference in a 2-0 victory over Georgia Southwestern on Friday afternoon at Hurricane Field.

UNCP improves to 3-0 overall. GSW dropped its second-straight match and falls to 1-2. It was the first Peach Belt Conference match of the season for both schools.

Amalia Arvidsson opened the Lady Braves scoring at the 31:08 mark when her header found the back of the net off an assist from Fanny Forsman.

It didn't take long for UNCP to add an insurance score. The Lady Braves struck again in the 37th minute when Elke Groothuis collected her second goal of the season. Groothuis took a lead pass over the midfield stripe, ran past the defense and beat GSW goalkeeper Amber Bahri in a one-on-one breakaway.

The match was suspended for one hour with 19:47 left in regulation due to lightning in the area. The break provided no extra fire power for the Lady 'Canes offense as GSW was shutout for the second-consecutive contest.

UNCP finished with a 9-0 advantage in shots on goal. The Lady Braves also held a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.

Carolann Simpson paced the Lady Hurricanes with two shots while Heather Thoele added one.

Bahri pulled down seven saves. Britney Bennett did not have to stop a shot for UNCP.

Southwestern returns to the pitch on Sunday for a 1 p.m. match against Thomas University (Ga.) at Hurricane Field.
