17th-Ranked Clayton State Clips Lady 'Canes

AMERICUS- A pair of first half goals by Clayton State (14-2, 9-1 PBC) proved to be too many for the Georgia Southwestern (0-15, 0-9 PBC) women's soccer team to recover from as the Lakers defeated GSW, 5-0, Wednesday afternoon at Hurricane Field.

Clayton State, ranked 17th in the latest NCAA Division II poll, fired shots early with seven in the first twelve minutes of the game. They put their first goal in at the 13:57 mark off a breakaway. The Lakers got their second goal at the 28:12 mark with a pass across from the left side and hit the top corner just out of the keepers reach. GSW's keeper Elyse Gowen took on the Lakers defence and was able to shut them down with seven more saves before the half ended.

Clayton entered the second half with the same drive as the first, scoring their third goal 4 minutes in from the top of the 18. Minutes later goal number four was achieved with a boot from 30 yards out. The fifth and final goal was kicked in at the 80:16 mark off a corner kick.

The Lady Canes had a few shots on goal during the game from Colleen Livings, Tara Harrison and Haley Oubre. Gowen took on 25 shots from the Lakers defense and made 20 saves compared to the Lakers 5. Gowen's 20 saves were the most by a GSW goalie in a match this season.

The Lady Canes are back home this Saturday, Oct. 25 at 3:30 p.m. to take on the Armstrong Pirates.
