AMERICUS, Ga. - The 22nd-ranked Armstrong State University women's soccer team scored seven unanswered goals in the first half Saturday afternoon to lead Georgia Southwestern, 7-1, at the break and tacked on a final score in the closing seconds to defeat GSW, 8-1, at Hurricane Field in the Peach Belt Conference opener for both schools.

GSW lost its third straight match and drops to 2-3 this fall overall, while Armstrong has won four in a row and improved its overall mark to 4-1.

After Armstrong opend the match with a score in the eighth minute, the Lady Hurricanes were the beneficiaries of a Pirate hand ball in the box 71 seconds later that led to a converted penalty kick by Bri Reda, her first goal of the season.

From there it was all Armstrong. The Pirates scored six more times in the ensuing 28 minutes and led, 7-1, at the halftime break.

The final goal of the match came from Armstrong with four seconds left in regulation.

The Pirates finished with an 18-1 shots on goal advantage and a 12-0 edge in corner kicks.

Goalkeeper Elyse Gowen made 10 saves for GSW. Armstrong starting keeper Erica Laurens was unable to stop the penalty kick and had a short afternoon of work, exiting after in the 18th minute. Fatima Dimodica and Michelle Watson divided the rest of the time without facing a shot. 

The Lady Hurricanes are home on Tuesday to host Toccoa Falls College in a non-conference game at 1 p.m.
