GSW Tennis Places Six On All-Academic Team

AMERICUS – The Georgia Southwestern tennis teams combined for six Peach Belt Conference All-Academic honorees in 2015 as recently announced by the league office. Sophomore Abel Acuna-Moreno was selected to the men's team while seniors Carly Cangelosi and Victoria Ondo along with junior Sydnee Smith and sophomores Anna Kate Shaw and Jamie Thomas earned mention on the women's side.

Acuna-Moreno led the Hurricanes in singles victories (8) this spring. The Madrid, Spain, native played the majority of the season at No. 4. He partnered with Oliver Marshall in doubles and won seven matches at the at No. 2 spot. Acuna-Moreno carries a 3.38 grade point average and is pursuing his degree in computer science.

GSW led the PBC with five recipients on the women's side. 

Cangelosi earned the award for the second consecutive year. The Valdosta, Ga., native holds a 3.57 GPA as an exercise science major. She led the Lady Hurricanes this spring playing at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles.

Ondo holds a 3.35 GPA as a psychology major. The Athens, Ga., native opened the season at No. 6 singles but worked her way up to No. 3 by mid-February. She joined Cangelosi to play No. 1 doubles.

Shaw holds a 3.69 GPA as an early childhood education major. The Rabun County, Ga., native spent the majority of the season at No. 2 singles. She picked up seven doubles victories splitting time between the No. 1 and No. 2 positions.

Thomas holds a 3.83 GPA as an exercise science major. The Waycross, Ga., native played in several different slots for the Lady Hurricanes in singles this spring, including a win at No. 2 at Point University. She picked up seven doubles victories splitting time between the No. 2 and No. 3 positions.

Smith joins Cangelosi as a repeat recipient of the all-academic award. The Pelham, Ga., native holds a 3.45 GPA as a nursing major. Her spring was highlighted by a win in her lone match at No. 1 singles, otherwise, Smith played at No. 2. On the doubles side, she split time playing at No. 1 and No. 2.
