Cox was an assistant coach at Savannah State (2008-09) and Mercer (2007-08) prior to his arrival at Georgia Southwestern. His coaching career began at Santa Fe Community College as an assistant men's basketball coach. He began his basketball playing career at Middle Georgia College in Cochran, where he led the Warriors to the 2002 GJCAA State Championship game. He wrapped up his junior college playing days ranked in the top 20 in both scoring and field goal percentage in the Georgia Junior College Athletic Association. Cox played his final two seasons of collegiate basketball at Clayton State, where he helped lead the Lakers to their first-ever top 20 national ranking.

During Cox's tenure as Head Cross Country Coach, the Lady 'Canes have seen their best conference finish in program history.

The Peachtree City, Ga. native received his Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Clayton State in 2004 and earned a Master of Education degree from Grand Canyon University in 2006.
