GSW finished 24th of 27 teams at the NCAA Division II Southeast Region Championships hosted by the University of Montevallo on Saturday morning. Ashleigh Owens paced the Lady Hurricanes by completing the 6K in 24:14.76 for 75th place out of 182 competitors. Owens' time ranks as the fourth-fastest 6K in program history.
A pair of Georgia Southwestern State University student-athletes received awards at the Peach Belt Conference Cross Country Championships Banquet on Friday evening in Milledgeville. Katherine McGarr was named to the Peach Belt All-Academic Team and Ashleigh Owens earned All-Sportsmanship accolades.
GSW raced on the same course back on Sept. 10 to start its 2016 season. The Lady Hurricanes saw marked improvement in times across the board on Saturday. Cambron-Miller saw the biggest jump as she shaved 2:45 off her September time. Ross also took more than two minutes (2:10) off her pace. McGarr (1:16) and Ard (1:05) were over a minute better with Fortson (0:59) and Calcutt (0:58) just shy of the one-minute mark. Lewis (0:43) and Owens (0:40) were significantly faster as well.
The Lady Hurricanes placed five individuals in the Top 25 overall and finished third of 11 teams at the Savannah College of Art and Design Atlanta Invitational Friday evening at the Coweta County Fairgrounds in Newnan, Ga.
Ashleigh Owens ran the sixth-fastest 5K in GSW history and Katherine McGarr posted the ninth-fastest time as the Lady Hurricanes finished second out of five teams on Saturday.
The Lady Hurricanes return four of their top five runners from a year ago, including sophomore Savannah Ross, who posted GSW's fastest time at the conference championships last fall. Junior Ashleigh Owens led GSW in six of the team's seven races in 2015 and holds four of the top 10 fastest 5k times in school history. Youth prevails once again for GSW as the Lady Hurricanes do not have a senior on their roster.
The GSW cross country team is hosting its seventh annual Remembrance Run on Saturday, Sept. 3, at the Sumter County Parks & Recreation Sports Complex. The women's 5k race starts at 8:30 a.m. with the men's 5k race to follow at 9 a.m.
Former Southland Academy (Americus) head cross country coach Paula McDonald has been hired to lead the Lady Hurricanes. Along with coach Patrick Calcutt, the Southland programs combined to win two GISA Class AAA state championships and five region titles.
