Canes Sweep Philadelphia

The Georgia Southwestern baseball team was happy to be back in the friendly confines of Hurricane Field on Monday. The ‘Canes bats came to life and the pitching was outstanding in a doubleheader sweep of visiting Philadelphia University. GSW took game one 10-0 in seven innings and game two 7-1.

GSW scored the first run of the game in the second inning when after a walk and two singles, Francisco Gomez scored on a fielder's choice.

In the fourth inning, after two of the first three batters walked, Byron Haynes hit a shot over the left field fence to clear the bases and put the ‘Canes up by four.

GSW put added three more runs in the fifth. Two walks started the inning. Daniel Lynn then doubled to right field to drive in Jared Allen. Patrick McCarthy followed that with a single of his own to score Nick Rex. Lynn would later score on a fielder's choice.

The ‘Canes put the game on ice in the seventh when Rex singled with one out, Lynn walked, McCarthy singled to right to drive in Rex, Gomez singled to left to drive in Lynn and Daniel Stokes doubled to right to drive in McCarthy. The game was called at that point due to the Hurricanes 10-run lead.

RM Cozza (2-1) earned the complete game victory for GSW while Kyle Noonan (0-1) took the loss for Philadelphia in five innings of work surrendering seven runs.

Haynes led the offensive assault for the ‘Canes, finishing 2 for 3 with the home run (3) and three runs batted in. Stokes and McCarthy each added two hits in the winning effort.

Game two saw more of the same from GSW. The ‘Canes scored two in the first when Rex led off the game with a double to right center and two batters later, McCarthy drove him in on single to left. McCarthy eventually scored when DJ Decker was walked with the bases loaded.

A couple of Philadelphia errors led to the GSW run in the second after Rex led off the inning with a single. Hurricanes starting pitcher Colin Duffie worked his way out of trouble in the third and fourth innings. The visiting Rams stranded five men over those two frames.

The ‘Canes were on the board again in the fourth when Allen singled, Rex walked and McCarthy laced a one out single to center to score Allen. A Gomez sacrifice fly to center brought home Rex to give GSW a 5-0 lead.

A solo home run by Decker in the fifth and a RBI single by McCarthy in the sixth proved to be more than enough insurance for Duffie (2-3), who earned the complete game victory for GSW while Victor Quint (0-1) took the loss giving up five earned runs in five innings of work for Philadelphia.

McCarthy let the offense in game two going 3 for 4 with three runs batted in. Nick Rex added two hits of his own for GSW.

With the sweep, GSW improves to 9-17 on the season. Philadelphia falls to 0-6. The ‘Canes are back in action this Friday, March 21 hosting Armstrong Atlantic State University. First pitch is set for 7pm at Hurricane Field in the Susan K. Smith Athletic Complex.
