The family of Eddie Ward, a former GSW baseball player from 1970-72, GSW graduate (1974), and head softball coach from 2004-17 is soliciting donations for the Eddie Ward Family Scholarship. Our goal is to raise at least $25,000 to ensure the endowment and continuation of this fund which will be awarded to a deserving, worthy softball player hopefully starting in the Fall 2020.
Coach Ward came to GSW as a freshmen in 1970. He loved it so much that he stayed along with his wife Betty Anne. They have been avid supporters of Hurricane Athletics since the 70s and have spent countless hours raising money and helping the Athletic Department in any and all capacity. After having two daughters of his own, Coach Ward became a champion of women athletics wanting to make sure that his daughters and all females had the opportunity to participate in sports. This passion and drive can been seen in the countless hours that he spent with the Americus Girls Softball League and through his endless dedication and time to the GSW Softball program. He sacrificed his time and money for many years to ensure that this program thrived even through the NAIA to NCAA transition.
His efforts and his passion for GSW Athletics still continues today in his retirement as he continues to support our programs by being an active member of Canes 360 and constantly seeking to help in all fundraising efforts. By creating this scholarship, Coach Ward and his family are ensuring that female softball athletes at GSW will continue to have opportunities to participate in athletics and also achieve the ultimate goal of an education. It also stands as a tribute to a man who has dedicated his adult years to giving back to his alma mater and promoting women in athletics.
Director of Athletics Mike Leeder had this to say about Coach Ward and the potential for this scholarship offering, "We certainly appreciate Eddie's continued support of Hurricane athletics. He was a valued member of our coaching staff, and was instrumental in guiding our softball program from the NAIA to the NCAA Division II level. We look forward to Eddie and his family's participation in advancing the competitive success of our softball program through this endowed scholarship."
