Armstrong Atlantic Takes Two From GSW

Georgia Southwestern lost both games of a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader against Armstrong Atlantic State University on Saturday afternoon in Americus. In game one, late inning runs gave the visiting Pirates an 8-4 win. In game two, it was an early attack that led to Armstrong Atlantic's 12-6 victory.

Georgia Southwestern took an early lead in game one by putting a run on the board in the first inning. The Hurricanes first three batters reached based. However, the rally fizzled and only Nick Rex would come around to score.

Armstrong Atlantic answered with two runs in the third on a Juan Dorado RBI double and a Josh Wilson run-scoring single. The Pirates 2-1 lead would hold until the fifth inning when GSW rallied for three runs highlighted by Byron Haynes' two-run double.

AASU took the lead for good in the seventh. The Pirates scattered five hits and four runs in the frame to go ahead 6-4. They added two runs in the ninth to close out the game.

RM Cozza (2-2) took the loss for GSW. Cozza pitched seven innings allowing six runs on ten hits. Ross Partee (4-1) earned the win for AASU. He pitched seven innings and gave up four runs on nine hits. Offensively, Rex and Daniel Lynn each contributed two hits for the ‘Canes.

In the nightcap, the visitors jumped on GSW early scoring three in the first. Two throwing errors by the ‘Canes in the second proved to be costly in a five run frame. GSW put two runs of their own on the board in the second led by a Daniel Stokes RBI single, but the Hurricanes would be unable to cut the deficit to less than six the rest of the way.

AASU added a run in the fifth and three in the sixth. GSW answered each time when Haynes pushed a run across in the fifth, and Lynn brought home a run in the sixth. The ‘Canes last rally came in the seventh when Jarred Allen drove in a run and Rex added an RBI single.

James Wilson (3-3) got the loss in game two. He was roughed up in one inning of work, allowing seven runs, six earned, on five hits. Jeff Chase (3-1) was the winning pitcher for AASU. He went six innings, gave up ten hits while striking out ten and walking five.
Rex led the ‘Canes offensively in game two collecting three hits. Stokes and Patrick McCarthy and added two apiece.

GSW (9-20, 3-9 PBC) heads to St. Augustine, Fla. Wednesday to take on Flagler College.
