The Hurricanes of Georgia Southwestern State University walked
off the baseball diamond with 8-7 and 4-3 wins on Sunday to take
the series against the Bearcats of Lander University.
In Saturday night's game, the Canes capitalized on an error to jump
out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. The Bearcats came back to
score 1 run in the third, but the score would remain 3-1 until the
8th inning. Lander recorded four hits in the top of the 8th and
pushed four runs across the plate, making the score 5-3. GSW made a
run for the win in the bottom of the 9th when Byron Haynes was hit
by a pitch. Haynes advanced to third on a single by Daniel Lynn and
then scored on a ground ball to second by Pat McCarthy, bringing
the score to 5-4, but the rally was snuffed out just two batters
later. Daniel Stokes (3 for 3) and Pat McCarthy (2 for 4) led GSW
at the plate. Chris Carroll took the loss for the Canes.
The first game Sunday was a back-and-forth battle for the lead, as
Lander opened the game with a triple and promptly scored its first
run early. The Canes answered back in the bottom of the first,
taking advantage of 2 hits and 4 errors to put 4 runs (Nick Rex,
Daniel Lynn, Byron Haynes, Francisco Gomez) across the plate. The
Bearcats would go on to plate runs in the second (2), third (2),
fifth (1), and seventh (1) innings. GSW would tally runs again in
the third (2), fourth (1) and sixth (1) innings and then hang on
through the ninth for an 8-7 victory. Cody Adams (2 for 3, 3 RBI)
and Pat McCarthy (2 for 4, 1 RBI, 2 runs) paced the Hurricanes in
the win. Daniel Stokes, Daniel Lynn, Byron Haynes and Jordan Mullis
each added a hit for the Canes. R.M. Cozza recorded the win for
GSW.
The second game of the Sunday double header went a bit slower than
the first. Lander was the first to score (1 in the second), but GSW
answered back with 1 run of its own in the third. The Bearcats
plated 2 more runs in the fourth, and held a 3-1 lead until the
Canes pushed a runner across in the seventh to close the gap to
3-2. But it would come down to the bottom of the ninth for GSW to
take the game. Scooter Houston stepped in at the plate for Miles
Martin, but grounded out to third. Jordan Mullis then singled and
advanced to second on an error by the third baseman. Nick Rex
followed with another single, which advanced Mullis to third. Rex
advanced to second on a wild pitch before Daniel Lynn was
intentionally walked to load the bases. Byron Haynes was hit by a
pitch to move all runners and score Mullis to tie the game 3-3.
McCarthy was then hit by another pitch, allowing Rex a free pass to
home as the winning run. Jordan Mullis (3 for 3, 1 RBI), Daniel
Lynn (2 for 2, 1 RBI), and Pat McCarthy (2 for 4, 1 RBI) lead the
charge for GSW. Freshman Bud Fuller took the win for the Canes.
Georgia Southwestern (4-10 overall, 2-2 Peach Belt) plays again
Tuesday, February 26 against the University of West Georgia at
Hurricane Field in the Susan K. Smith Complex. The first pitch will
be at 2:00 PM.
