The Georgia Southwestern baseball team lost to Francis Marion
University 13-1 on Saturday evening at Hurricane Field.
For the visiting Patriots, four was the magic number. FMU scored
four in the third, fourth and seventh innings en route to the Peach
Belt Conference victory. They added a single run in the sixth. GSW
batters were held in check until the ninth when the ‘Canes
pushed across their lone run of the game on a Daniel Stokes
single.
Andrew Wiggum (1-6) took the loss going 3.1 innings while allowing
six runs on nine hits. He struck out three. David Walters (8-4)
earned the complete-game win for FMU. Walters scattered seven hits
while striking out seven.
Stokes went 2-for-4 for the ‘Canes while knocking in the
lone run. Noble Coley and Daniel Lynn had two hits apiece for
GSW.
Ryan Hypke led the visiting Patriots with a 5-for-6 performance at
the plate with a double. He knocked in four. Preston Shuey added
four hits, with a double, and three RBI. Keon Graves added three
RBI of his own. Justin Green and Jared Barkdoll had multi-hit
nights.
With the loss, GSW falls to 14-26 overall and 5-14 in the Peach
Belt Conference. Francis Marion improves to 29-16 overall and 13-9
in PBC play. The ‘Canes and Patriots meet tomorrow at noon
for a doubleheader to conclude their weekend series.
