The Georgia Southwestern and Francis Marion University baseball
teams combined for 44 runs on 56 hits as they split a Peach Belt
Conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Hurricane Field. GSW
took game one 11-4. Francis Marion won the rubber game of the
weekend series 19-10.
The Hurricanes got off to a fast start in game one by scoring three
runs in the first, highlighted by a Cody Adams two-run single.
Byron Haynes' two-run double in the second led to four more GSW
runs and by the end of the frame the ‘Canes had an early 7-1
lead.
Francis Marion pushed across a run in the third on a Justin Greene
solo home run and another in the fourth to pull within four, but
that's as close as the visiting Patriots would get. FMU added one
more run in the eighth on a Vince Farfaglia solo shot.
GSW scored a run in sixth and another in the seventh before Patrick
McCarthy and Adams brought around the game's final two runs in the
eighth on back-to-back doubles.
RM Cozza (4-3) earned the complete-game win for GSW while allowing
ten hits. He struck out nine and walked two. Erik Sommerville (5-3)
took the loss for FMU. Sommerville gave up three runs - two earned
- in a third of an inning. He walked two and allowed two hits while
facing only seven batters.
Nick Rex went a perfect 3-for-3 for the ‘Canes. He scored two
and drove in one. Jordan Mullis also finished with three hits and
scored two. McCarthy had two hits, with a double, three RBI, scored
a run and had a stolen base. Adams had two hits, with a double and
three RBI. Haynes also had a multi-hit game, with a double and two
RBI. Jared Allen added a triple.
Preston Shuey led the visiting Patriots with a 3-for-4 performance
at the plate in game one. He knocked in a run. Greene and Farfaglia
had multi-hit games to go with their solo home runs.
In game two, it was tied at 3-3 until a 13-run fifth inning for the
visiting Patriots ultimately did in the Hurricanes and gave Francis
Marion an insurmountable 16-3 lead. FMU brought 18 batters to the
plate in that frame and collected nine hits, while the ‘Canes
committed four errors and surrendered four walks.
GSW tried to claw back into it by scoring two in the bottom half of
the fifth, four more in the sixth, and a run in the seventh, but it
wasn't enough. Francis Marion tacked on two of their own in the
sixth and the game's final run in the ninth to get the win.
Jody Sellars (1-2) took the loss for GSW. He gave up six runs -
three earned - in four innings of work. Sellars allowed seven hits
and struck out four while walking two. Zach Petty (4-0) was the
winning pitcher in game two. Petty went five innings, allowed five
runs - four earned - on eight hits. He struck out six ‘Cane
batters. Zach Farry collected his 12th save of the season by
throwing four innings of relief.
McCarthy finished the second game 3-for-4 for the ‘Canes. He
scored two and drove in two. Mullis had two hits and scored two.
Rex had two hits and scored a run. Haynes had another multi-hit
game, with a three-run home run, and four RBI. He scored two runs
and had a stolen base.
Greg Phelps and Jared Barkdoll finished with four hits apiece for
FMU. Barkdoll had an inside the park home run in the first inning
to go with a double and four RBI. Keon Graves added three hits for
the Patriots. Shuey and Chris Honeycutt had two hits each.
After Sunday's action, GSW is 15-27 overall and 6-15 in the Peach
Belt Conference. Francis Marion stands at 30-17 overall and 14-10
in PBC play. The ‘Canes welcome Columbus State to Hurricane
Field on Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m.
