The Georgia Southwestern baseball team defeated Thomas
University 11-1 on Wednesday afternoon at Hurricane Field.
The ‘Canes scored a run in the first that was set up by a
one-out Daniel Lynn triple. The visiting Night Hawks answered with
their lone run in the top of the second. From there it was all
GSW.
The Hurricanes brought 11 batters to the plate in the third inning
and generated seven runs on three hits and a Thomas University
error. Night Hawk starting pitcher Chris Poulos walked three
consecutive batters after Daniel Stokes had reached on a throwing
error to start the frame and Jordan Mullis doubled. Nick Rex
proceeded to drive in one on a sacrifice fly. A Lynn single knocked
in two more and Francisco Gomez cleared the bases with a triple.
Gomez went on to score the last run of the third.
Any hope Thomas had to rally was snuffed in the fourth when Lynn
made a remarkable defensive play in left field to rob Stephen
Cheney of a two-run home run. Lynn timed his jump perfectly,
reached over the fence and pulled Cheney's shot back into the field
of play for the out.
GSW added two runs in the fourth. The ‘Canes final run in the
sixth was brought in on a Cody Adams double.
Jody Sellars (1-1) earned the win going six innings while allowing
the one run. He scattered five hits and struck out four. Tyler
Smith pitched an inning of scoreless relief.
Lynn led the GSW offense with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate.
He belted the triple, knocked in two and scored three runs. Gomez
finished 2-for-3 with a double and a triple, two RBI and two runs
scored. Mullis also had a two-hit night that included a double. He
stole a base and scored a run.
With the win, GSW improves to 12-23. The Canes travel to
UNC-Pembroke to take on the Braves in a Peach Belt Conference
series starting Saturday at 1 p.m.
