No. 25 West Alabama takes final game of series, 7-4

The 25th-ranked University of West Alabama baseball team improved to 5-1 on the season with a 7-4 victory over Georgia Southwestern on Sunday afternoon at Hurricane Field. GSW falls to 2-5 on the season with the loss.

The visiting Tigers scored a run in the first inning for the third straight game. Three consecutive singles with two outs in the inning gave UWA the 1-0 advantage.

Southwestern answered in the second.  Zack Stanton led off the inning with a single to the right side of the infield and advanced to second when the UWA starting pitcher Matt Hill was unable to grab the toss from second baseman Jeremy Finney.

After a Cody Adams ground out to short, Kevin Carroll knocked a double to left that advanced Stanton to third.

Daniel Stokes picked up his first RBI of the season when he slapped a single to center field to score Stanton.  Miles Martin connected for a single through the right side of the infield to give the ‘Canes their third consecutive hit and second run of the inning.  Stokes advanced to third on the Martin single and proceeded to score off a sacrifice fly from Chris Lingham to round out the GSW scoring.

Kevin Deese broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the fifth for West Alabama with a single to left field that scored Jeremy Finney and Douglas Frazier.

The Tigers added another run in the seventh inning and one more in the ninth.

Matt Hill (2-0) pitched six innings for the Tigers to get the win. He allowed three runs on eight hits with three strikeouts.

Andrew Whiggum (0-1) took the loss for GSW.  Whiggum pitched five innings, gave up five runs - four earned - and struck out four.  Brandon Reeder allowed a run in three innings of work and Bud Fuller gave up one run in his inning of action.

Jared Allen went 3-for-3 at the plate for GSW and Miles Martin went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

The ten hits by the ‘Canes ties a season-high.
