Hurricanes sweep doubleheader

GSW defeated Tusculum College 10-6 and 3-0 on Sunday afternoon at Hurricane Field.

A six-run third inning gave the Hurricanes a 7-1 lead in the first game.  Another two runs in the fourth bumped the advantage to 9-1.  Tusculum responded with two runs in the fifth and single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth.

Jody Sellars pitched a scoreless ninth to seal the victory for Southwestern.
 
Newcomer Bud Long led the Hurricanes offense with a 4-for-5 performance at the plate that included a double.  Francisco Gomez went 3-for-5 with a double, scored two runs and knocked in a run. Daniel Lynn added two hits and scored a run.   
 
Ricky Feliz and Nate Grabowski had two hits apiece for the Pioneers.
 
Starter Andrew Whiggum earned his first victory of the season. Whiggum pitched six innings, allowed five runs - four earned- while recording three strikeouts. Austin Smith gave up a run in two innings of work.
 
Max Keleher took the loss for Tusculum, allowing six earned runs in 2.2 innings.

In the nightcap, newcomer Zack Whitman pitched the first complete-game shutout for the Hurricanes since RM Cozza blanked Philadelphia University 10-0 on March 19, 2008. Whitman allowed only two hits and struck out 10 on Sunday.

Once again, the third inning proved to be the difference as GSW scored two in the frame off of three singles.  The 'Canes added an insurance run in the sixth.

Newcomer Chris Lingham swung the hot bat in game two, finishing 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI. Shane Doyle added a pair of singles.
 
GSW (5-7) travels to Valdosta State on Wednesday for a 5:00 p.m. game.
