Georgia Southwestern State University baseball players Jared Allen, Bud Long, Tyler Daniel and Jody Sellars have been named to the 2010 Peach Belt Conference All-Academic Team as announced by the conference office on Tuesday.

Allen, a first team selection, started 38 games at first base for the Hurricanes and finished with a .296 batting average. The Lyons, Ga. native hit an impressive .348 in conference play - ranking second on the team. Overall, he tallied nine doubles, three home runs – including a grand slam in Game 2 of the Georgia College series - and 24 RBIs while swiping 13 stolen bases. Allen had an eight-game hitting streak during his junior campaign and recorded 11 multi-hit games.

In the classroom, the Mathematics major owns a 3.62 grade point average and is a two-time member of the PBC Presidential Honor Roll and a 2009 PBC All-Academic second team selection.  

Long, a second team selection, started 44 games in the outfield this spring for GSW and finished his senior season with a team-high .367 batting average in conference play. Overall, Long led the team in runs scored (50) and slugging percentage (.521). He tallied 11 doubles, a triple, six home runs and 37 RBIs while swiping 10 stolen bases. The Kite, Ga. native had a 12-game hitting streak during the season and recorded 19 multi-hit games. He was recently named to the PBC All-Conference second team. 

In the classroom, the Business Management major was a 2008-09 member of the PBC Presidential Honor Roll and currently holds a 3.57 grade point average.   

Daniel, a third team selection, split time as a midweek and weekend starter for the ‘Canes pitching staff this spring. He made 15 appearances during his sophomore campaign, with nine starts, and recorded 25 strikeouts in 54.2 innings of work.

A two-time member of the PBC Presidential Honor Roll, the Dublin, Ga. native was also a 2009 PBC All-Academic third team selection. Daniel, a Health and Physical Education major, holds a 3.49 grade point average.

Sellars, a third team selection, served as a weekend starter for the ‘Canes pitching staff this spring. He made 13 appearances, with 12 starts, and won a team-high seven games. Sellars, a junior, started the season by throwing 28 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run.

The Americus native was named to the 2010 Peach Belt Conference All-Tournament team after throwing 7.2 innings against Flagler in the ‘Canes second game of the tourney. He allowed two runs and three walks while striking out three batters to earn the win in the semifinal.

A two-time member of the PBC Presidential Honor Roll, Sellars was also a 2009 PBC All-Academic third team selection. A Physical Education major, he holds a 3.48 grade point average.

All four student-athletes played substantial roles in leading GSW to a 29-19 record this season, a dramatic improvement from the 19-33 overall record posted last spring. The Hurricanes won 12 conference games in 2010, up four wins from last year and the most in a season in four years of NCAA Division II competition. In addition, GSW made its first postseason appearance in baseball, finishing runner-up at the Peach Belt Conference Tournament.

The All-Academic Team is part of a season-long program recognizing the outstanding accomplishments of PBC student-athletes in the classroom as well as on the field. To be eligible for the team, a student-athlete must participate in at least half of her team's events and be either a starter or significant contributor; have achieved a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale); and have completed at least one full academic year at her current institution.
