Hurricanes split DH with West Alabama

AMERICUS - The Georgia Southwestern baseball team split a Saturday afternoon doubleheader with West Alabama at Hurricane Stadium. UWA took Game 1, 13-10, and GSW won Game 2, 8-1.

Jared Allen finished the day 5-for-9 at the plate with a pair of doubles and 5 RBIs to lead the Hurricanes.

GAME 1: WEST ALABAMA 13, GSW 10

After scoring single runs in the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead, GSW surrendered 11 runs over the middle three innings and West Alabama held off a late rally from the Hurricanes to win Game 1 of the series, 13-10.

Southwestern scored six runs in the ninth to make things interesting, but Andrew Anderson was thrown out at third attempting to stretch a double to end the ballgame.

Allen went 3-for-5 with three RBIs, a double and a run scored. Corey Benson was 2-for-3 with two doubles, a walk and three runs scored.

Chris Duncan finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs scored to lead UWA. Ladarrius Cole, Micah Reaves, Kevin Deese and Jay Jennings had two hits apiece for the Tigers.

Trent Franzago (0-2) took the loss for the Hurricanes, allowing seven runs in five innings of work. He struck out five and walked one.

Colter Millican (1-0) allowed four runs - three earned - in 5.1 innings to get the win for UWA. He struck out three and walked two.   

GAME 2: GSW 8, WEST ALABAMA 1

The Hurricanes scored three runs in the first and never looked back as they took Game 2 of the four-game weekend series, 8-1.

Allen drove in a run in the second to give GSW a 4-0 lead.

After UWA got on the board with a run in the fifth, the Hurricanes added three more in the bottom of the frame off an RBI from Jarrod Taylor and two from an Anderson double.

The Hurricanes scored the final run of the game in the sixth inning when John Duran singled up the middle to bring around Benson from second after he had reached on a double down the left-field line to start the inning.

Allen was the only GSW batter to collect multiple hits in Game 2. He added two RBIs and scored two runs.

Colin McKeen went 2-for-3 and scored the lone Tiger run to lead UWA (2-3).

Zach Whitman (1-1) tossed six innings for the Hurricanes, allowed one run and held UWA to four hits. He struck out two and walked four. Gray Carden pitched a scoreless seventh.

Barry Meeks (0-1) gave up seven runs - five earned - in five innings for the Tigers. He struck out one and walked five.

The Hurricanes (2-4) and Tigers complete their series Sunday afternoon with doubleheader beginning at noon.
