'Canes win at West Georgia, 8-1

CARROLLTON - A five-run first inning led the Georgia Southwestern baseball team to its fifth-straight win, an 8-1 decision over West Georgia on Thursday at Cole Field. Andrew Archer and Michel Coffey led GSW batters with three hits apiece.

The Hurricanes improve to 8-6 this spring, while UWG falls to 4-7. GSW has won all four meetings between the schools since the 'Canes joined the NCAA in 2006-07.

Archer, Jared Allen, Paschel Poston, Corey Benson and Heath Lock drove in runs in the first. Benson's RBI came off a double.

Andrew Anderson brought Allen, who doubled one batter earlier, around to score in the second, giving GSW a 6-1 lead.

The Hurricanes' final two runs came in the fourth off of an Anderson sacrifice fly and an Archer RBI single.

Archer finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate to lead GSW. Coffey went 3-for-5. Poston collected with two hits.

Phillip Keys had two hits for UWG.

GSW starter Trent Franzago threw four innings, allowed one run and three hits, struck out six and did not walk a batter. Zach Whitman (2-1) picked up the win for the 'Canes with three innings of relief. He did not allow a run, held UWG to one hit and struck out three. Corey Hawes and Gray Carden each tossed a scoreless inning.

Wolves starter Walker White (0-1) did not make it out of the first inning. He surrendered five runs on four hits and walked a batter.

The Hurricanes return home to host Brewton-Parker on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
