GSW rallies from 3 down to defeat Georgia College, 4-3

AMERICUS- The 30th-ranked Georgia Southwestern baseball team scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to cap a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over No. 7 Georgia College on Friday evening at Hurricane Stadium.

Southwestern scored a run in seventh, a run in the eighth and the two in the ninth to rally from a 3-0 deficit.

With the win, GSW moves within a game of first-place Georgia College in the Peach Belt Conference West Division standings. The Hurricanes improve to 19-13 overall and 7-6 in the PBC. Georgia College falls to 23-9 overall, 8-5 in PBC play.

GSW starting pitcher Trent Franzago (5-4) held GC to three hits over the first three innings, but that included a solo home run from Richard Pirkle and a triple by Patrick Daugherty which led to two Bobcat runs. Pirkle struck again in the sixth with his eighth home run of the season, another solo shot, to give GC a 3-0 lead.

With one out in the seventh, Jared Allen and Paschal Poston hit back-to-back singles for GSW, Corey Benson was hit by a pitch and Beau Parker drove home the 'Canes first run of the game to start the comeback. Michel Coffey made it a one-run game with a leadoff home run in the eighth.

In the ninth for GSW, Coffey tied the game with an RBI single to right field that brought in Benson, who had opened the inning with a single. With two outs and runners on second and third, a passed ball third strike allowed Stephen Gaylor to score the winning run.

Franzago pitched all nine innings for GSW, gave up seven hits, walked three and struck out a season-high 10 batters.

GC starter Mike Guinane went eight innings, allowed two runs on six hits, walked two and struck out three. Tanner Moore (1-2) allowed two unearned runs in the ninth to take the loss.

Coffey and Benson had two hits apiece to lead GSW at the plate.

Pirkle finished 3-for-3 with a walk for Georgia College. Luke McKay added two hits.

The two teams meet again on Saturday in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
