Pair of Hurricanes named All-Academic

AMERICUS - Georgia Southwestern State University senior Tyler Daniel and sophomore Jarrod Taylor have earned 2012 Peach Belt Conference All-Academic baseball honors as announced by the conference office on Wednesday afternoon.

Daniel, a relief pitcher, appeared in 15 games this spring for the Hurricanes which ranked 34th in the PBC. The Dublin native inherited a team-high 15 runners over the course of the season and allowed only one to score. Daniel was tough to hit at home posting a team-low 1.42 earned run average. He threw 30 innings overall and recorded 24 strikeouts. In his four seasons at GSW, Daniel appeared in 51 contests, pitched 117 1/3 innings and struck out 69 batters.

In the classroom, the management major owns a 3.58 grade point average and is now a three-time PBC All-Academic Team selection and on pace to become a four-year member of the PBC Presidential Honor Roll. Daniel is also a Dean's List student and a Chi Alpha Sigma (National College Athlete Honor Society) inductee.  

Taylor started 30 games for GSW this spring splitting time as the designated hitter and first baseman. The Hawkinsville native came on strong down the stretch finshing with a .333 average over the final eight games. He belted three of his four doubles during that run and collected four RBIs. Overall, Taylor had seven multi-hit games and in conference play he posted a .288 average, which ranked second on the team.  

In the classroom, the exercise science major is a soon to be two-time member of the PBC Presidential Honor Roll and holds a 3.62 grade point average.   

The All-Academic Team is part of a season-long program recognizing the outstanding accomplishments of PBC student-athletes in the classroom as well as on the field. To be eligible for the team, a student-athlete must 1) participate in at least half of his/her team’s events and be either a starter or significant contributor; 2) achieved a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) and 3) completed at least one full academic year at his or her current institution.

The Peach Belt Conference Sports Information Directors oversee and select the teams.
