Several 'Canes On Summer Baseball Circuit

AMERICUS - Georgia Southwestern State University outfielders Evan Alderman and Devyn Newberry, along with pitcher Daniel Perez, are playing in summer baseball leagues that will begin play as early as this evening.

Alderman, who just completed his sophomore season for the Hurricanes, is playing for the Adirondack Trail Blazers of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League. Founded in 2011, the PGCBL features a 50-game schedule where each team is operated similar to a professional minor league team, providing players an opportunity to play under the same conditions using wooden bats, minor league specification baseballs, experiencing overnight road trips, and playing nightly before fans in a stadium. Rosters across the league are peppered with NCAA Division I players from schools such as Florida State, Auburn, Kentucky, Notre Dame, Rice, Indiana, Maryland and Baylor.

The Trail Blazers open with a home exhibition game tonight. The regular season begins Tuesday. You can track Alderman's progress this summer on the Trail Blazers website.

Newberry, who just completed his junior season for the Hurricanes, is representing GSW on the Dubois County (Ind.) Bombers of the Ohio Valley League. The Bombers will play 41 games before the league playoffs start on July 23. Teams in the OVL have minimum travel requirements for away games and return home after each contest. Rosters across the league are peppered with NCAA Division I players from schools such as Bowling Green, Dayton, New Mexico State, Middle Tennessee State and Murray State.

The Bombers open their regular season tonight at Owensboro before hosting Fulton (Ky.) on Saturday. You can track Newberry's progress this summer on the Bombers website.

Perez, who just completed his junior season for the Hurricanes, will suit up for the Florida Pokers of the South Florida Collegiate Baseball League. The Pokers will play 33 games before the league playoffs start on July 24. The SFCBL is a 10-team, not-for-profit, wood bat league. Joining Perez on the Pokers roster are NCAA Division I players from Campbell, Towson, Maine and Miami.

The Pokers open their regular season on Wednesday at Pompano Beach before hosting the Palm Beach Blazers on June 10. Keep up with Perez on the SFCBL website.
