Senior Day Smiles After Doubleheader Split

AMERICUS - Senior Devyn Newberry was 5-for-10 on the day and junior Will Redding went 4-for-8 with two doubles as the Georgia Southwestern baseball team rebounded from a 10-3 loss in Game 1 on Saturday to take the nightcap, 4-2, against Flagler College in a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader at Hurricane Stadium.

GSW ended the day with an overall record of 20-21 and a mark of 4-19 in the PBC while Flagler sits at 23-16 overall, 11-12 in conference play.

The schools wrap up their weekend series on Sunday at 1 p.m.

GAME 1: GSW 3, FLAGLER 10

Flagler erupted for six runs over the final two innings to pull away from the Hurricanes in the day's opening game.

The Saints jumped out to a 4-0 lead before GSW chipped away at the deficit with a run in the third inning on Dakota Long's RBI single and two more runs in the seventh to pull within one after an Alex Kranick two-run single.

Hurricanes starting pitcher Jordan McIlwain (4-4) threw 106 pitches and lasted seven innings before making way for Chad Adkins. McIlwain surrendered all four of his runs in the third and held Flagler to four hits. Adkins struggled over 2/3 of an inning and Matt Hubbard tossed the final 1 1/3.

Devyn Newberry went 3-for-5 at the plate in the opener and scored twice. Kranick was 2-for-3 with a walk.

James Jean and Bobby Bassler had two hits apiece for Flagler.

Mike O'Reilly (6-3) threw 115 pitches over 6 2/3 innings, scattered seven hits, walked one, struck out nine and was charged with all three GSW runs. Kyle Schackne kept the Hurricanes off the board over the final 2 1/3 innings.

GAME 2: GSW 4, FLAGLER 2

Both sides picked up all of their runs in the second and eighth innings. Flagler scored once on each occasion while GSW answered with a pair both times.

Will Redding produced the big hit for GSW in the second inning with an RBI double down the right field line.

After Flagler had tied the game at 2-2 in the top half of the eighth, GSW loaded the bases in the bottom half and plated the decisive score on a high chopper to the shortstop by senior Brandon Weaver. On the Hurricanes next at bat, senior Devyn Newberry beat the throw for an infield single to bring home the final run of the evening.

Kyle Spinks opened with five innings on the hill for the Hurricanes in only his second start of the spring. He held the Saints to one run, walked four and struck out five. Coty Graham tossed two scoreless innings and Mitch Holloway (3-3) fought through a shaky start to retire Flager in order in the ninth after allowing a run in the eighth. Holloway did not walk a batter and struck out two in two innings of work.

Redding had three hits, two of which were doubles, and an RBI for GSW. Newberry added two hits and drove in a run. GSW was outhit, 11-7.

Flagler got two-hit performances from Bryce Evans, Jake Hathaway and Nick Oberg.

Saints starting pitcher Michael Maiocco exited after the fifth, having held the Hurricanes to one earned run, but did not factor into the decision. Maiocco walked four and struck out four. Luke Cooksey (4-1) was tagged with his first loss of the season after allowing GSW to score twice during his 2 2/3 innings on the mound. Cooksey did not walk a batter and struck out four. Maclain Larson recorded the final out.
