West Georgia Belts 3 Home Runs, Shuts Out GSW

CARROLLTON, Ga. - The Georgia Southwestern baseball team struggled in a 9-0 loss against the University of West Georgia on Tuesday evening at Cole Field.

The Hurricanes had their overall record dip a game under .500 this spring to 23-24. GSW finished the non-conference portion of their schedule with a mark of 17-3 as two of the three defeats came at the hands of the Wolves. West Georgia improved to 15-1 in non-conference games in 2016 and 34-12 overall.

As it would turn out, the Wolves scored all of the runs they would need in their first at bat of the ballgame as leadoff hitter Artemis Kadkhodaian belted a home run to left center. West Georgia added another run later in the inning.

The Wolves came back with single runs in the second and third innings before extending their lead to 6-0 with two more in the fifth.

Caleb Lopes put an exclaimation mark on the win for West Georgia with a two-run blast in the seventh. It was the Wolves third round-tripper of the game and part of a three-run inning.

GSW starter Layne Gusler (1-7) was tagged with the loss after running into trouble in the first. Gusler pitched two innings and allowed three runs. Mitch Holloway followed with 2 2/3 innings on the hill. Matt Hubbard pitched 1 1/3 innings. Chad Adkins closed out the contest with two scoreless frames.

West Georgia starting pitcher T.J. Watson (3-2) covered his five innings to pick up the win. Brandon Goldsmith, Josh Morgan, Ethan Hunter and Mitchell Mannino took an inning apiece to combine with Watson for the shutout.

Will Redding and Dakota Long accounted for four of the Hurricanes six hits. Redding turned in a 2-for-3 effort that included a double. Long went 2-for-4 with a double. GSW has gone 21 consecutive innings without scoring a run.

Cade Marlowe and Tyler Hutch had three hits apiece to lead West Georgia.

The Hurricanes wrap up their season with a three-game Peach Belt Conference series at Young Harris College this weekend. Game 1 against the Mountain Lions is Saturday at 1 p.m.
