Newton Named PBC Freshman of the Week

AMERICUS, Ga. -- Georgia Southwestern State University utility player Josh Newton was named the Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the Week by the league office on Monday afternoon.

Newton had a monster three-game series against Claflin University, hitting .625 with four RBIs. He went 2-for-2 with three walks and an RBI in the opener, drove in two more in Game 2 and added two hits, including a double, in the finale. Newton, a native of Locust Grove, Ga., scored eight runs and drew a total of five walks for a .714 on-base percentage. He was the designated hitter in the first two games and the second baseman in the finale.

Newton becomes the sixth Hurricane to earn a PBC Freshman of the Week award, the first since teammate Hunter Foster garnered the distinction on Feb. 12, 2019.
