The GSW Canes hosted the Columbus Cougars, in front of one of
the largest crowds that the Storm Dome has seen, for their
conference opener. The Canes trailed for the majority of the night,
and at one point were down by 9 points.
With 3:28 left in the 2nd half, they began a charge that began with
Michael Carter making two clutch free throws, at the 45 second
mark. On the other end of the court, Aaron Wyatt came up with a
huge block. Following a missed lay-up, Carter claimed a vital
offensive rebound and a made lay-up that brought the Canes within 2
points of the Cougars. The following possession for the Cougars
ended with a steal by Frederick Jackson, who assisted Aaron Wyatt's
tying lay-up. Wyatt then came up with another steal for the
Canes.
With 4 ticks left on the clock, Anthony found himself shooting two,
with the score tied. He went 1-2 on that trip to the line, giving
the Canes a 1-point lead. The Cougars in-bounded the ball with an
overhead pass to the half-court line. Then, they called their final
timeout, with just over 3 ticks left on the clock. In the final
play, the ball was in-bounded by the Cougars, but knocked away by
Michael Carter. Carter inadvertently saved the ball to a member of
the opposing team, who immediately threw up a jumper, as the clock
expired. The shot found the goal and the Columbus State bench and
fans erupted, but so did the Canes' bench and fans, as the shot was
waved off by officials, and the scored stood with GSW winning by of
score of 82-81.
The leading scorer for the Canes was Aaron Wyatt with 29. Travis
Owsley and Anthony Sargent chipped in with 16 points each. The
Cougars were lead by Travis Matthews' 21 point effort.
The Canes' next game is Saturday at 4:00 pm, as they host Lander.
