With the team hampered yet again by illness, it was another
neck-and-neck fight to the buzzer Wednesday night for the
Hurricanes of Georgia Southwestern State University. GSW clawed its
way through a hard-fought Peach Belt Conference contest against
Georgia College & State University, but it was the Bobcats who
emerged victorious 59-58.
Seniors Corey Ward and Michael Carter led the Canes onto the floor
for the Senior Night match-up, while junior Aaron Wyatt was unable
to even dress out due to sickness. Anthony Sargent led all scorers
with 23 points and nine rebounds for the Hurricanes, while Corey
Ward added 16 points and three rebounds. Graham Martin led the
Bobcats with 16 points and five rebounds, while three others scored
in double figures to lead the charge.
GSW led 41-38 at the half, putting in 15 of 29 attempts (51.7%)
from the field and out-shooting Georgia College by 10 percent. The
second half would not be as kind, however, as the Hurricanes
shooting fell to just 17.4 percent from the field.
In a game that saw 14 lead changes and 11 ties, the Hurricanes were
on the cusp of victory during each minute that ticked from the
clock. The Bobcats largest lead was only seven points, and in the
last two minutes of the game it was only 1 point that separated the
teams. GSW had possession of the ball with just 0:07 left on the
clock with a shot at the win, but Anthony Sargent's buzzer-beater
from the lane trickled off the rim.
Georgia Southwestern (7-18, 4-14 PBC) returns to action on
Saturday, February 23, at home in the Storm Dome for another Peach
Belt Conference match-up against the University of North Carolina
at Pembroke. The game will tip off at 2:00 p.m.
