MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The NCAA Division I Alabama State men's basketball team connected on 11-of-14 free throws and 5-of-7 three point attempts over the final 12:21 to take back the lead and hold off a determined Georgia Southwestern squad, 67-57, at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome on Monday evening in exhibition action.

After going back-and-forth over the opening 20 minutes, GSW took a 23-22 lead into the halftime break.

ASU opened the second stanza with an 8-2 run to open a five-point advantage, 30-25, with 17:03 remaining.

The Hurricanes answered with a run of their own over the next two minutes, outscoring ASU 9-3, that ended with a three pointer by Talmadge Bell and put GSW ahead 34-33.

A Phillip Brown jumper at the 13:57 mark gave GSW its largest lead of the night, 37-34.  

GSW relinquished the lead for good with 11:55 remaining with Kenderek Washington converted a pair of free throw attempts for the Hornets.

Washington scored the next eight points for Alabama State, member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference, on a pair of three point baskets and two more free throws to open a six-point lead for the home team, 47-41 with 10:12 left in the contest.

Evan Mobley connected from beyond the arc on the next possession to cut the lead in half, but Southwestern could get no closer the rest of the way.

Both sides struggled from the floor in the opening half. GSW hit 7-of-27 shots (25.9 percent) while Alabama State went 7-for-22.

In the second period, the Hurricanes connected on 11-of-30 (36.7 percent) and ASU hit 11-of-20.

Southwestern won the battle on the boards, finishing with a 41-33 rebounding advantage, and had three more steals (7-4) than the Hornets.

GSW had a trio post double figures. Bell led the way for Southwestern in scoring with 18 points on 6-of-13 shooting. Brown finished with a double-double after scoring 13 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Matt Shaw chipped in 10 points.

Washington led all scorers with a 19-point performance and teammate Ivan Johnson knocked down 11-of-16 from the charity stripe en route to his 16-point evening.

Southwestern opens the regular season on Friday (Nov. 12) at Division I Kennesaw State.
