GSW Men's Basketball Hurricane Highlight #1: Season-Saving Win Streak

AMERICUS - The top Hurricane Highlight of the 2012-13 season came during a critical span of games midway through conference play as Georgia Southwestern turned around its season by winning five Peach Belt Conference contests in a row.

Coming off a 2-0 conference start, the Hurricanes (7-11, 3-8 PBC) came into the critical stretch of games having lost nine out of its last ten contests and it looked as if the goal of making the postseason conference tournament was fading rapidly.

With the fate of their season hanging by a thread, Southwestern responded by winning the next five contests by an average of 15 points per game.

In addition to the 30 point thrashing of Columbus State in the Storm Dome, a pair of impressive road victories highlighted the season-saving streak.

Led by Alan Arnett's 29 point effort, the 'Canes came back from 19 points down to earn an upset victory at then division leading Young Harris.

The win broke the Mountain Lions' eight-game winning streak as Southwestern became the first Peach Belt Conference opponent to claim victory on the Mountain Lions' home floor.

For his efforts, Arnett was honored as the Peach Belt Conference player of the week.

The final win of the streak proved to be another critical road victory, this time at west division champion Montevallo.

Jamon Hawkins' 28 point performance helped GSW capture a rare road victory February 13 in UM's Trustmark Arena. The 'Canes dealt Montevallo their only home loss on the season and broke a string of 12 consecutive home victories for the Falcons.

The trio of Hawkins, Arnett and Daryl Davis fueled Southwestern's suddenly upstart offense as the 'Canes averaged 79.4 points over the stretch compared to their season average of 67.8.

Hawkins spearheaded the scoring, averaging 17.4 points per contest while Arnett emerged to average 14.2 points over the five-game stretch.

Reserve forward Daryl Davis added great support in the post as the junior came off the bench to average 12.2 points over the span.

The winning streak proved to be the catalyst of an injury-plagued season as Southwestern went on to earn a .500 regular season record (13-13) and a spot in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament.

On Monday, the No. 3 GSW Hurricane Highlight of the 2013 women's tennis season will be revealed.
