TIGERVILLE, S.C. - Georgia Southwestern men's basketball newcomer Johathan Brooks has made the most of his first two games with the Hurricane program. Brooks posted his second-consecutive double-double on Saturday evening and led GSW to a 2-0 start after a 64-60 victory over Erskine College in Hayes Gymnasium.

Brooks scored 14 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.

It was another close game for the Hurricanes in the 2013 Conference Carolinas/Peach Belt Conference Challenge. There were 10 lead changes in this inaugural meeting with the Flying Fleet and neither side led by more than six points.

GSW managed to pull ahead by five points midway through the first half (20-15), but trailed 33-30 at the halftime break. The Hurricanes pounded the ball inside over the opening 20 minutes with 24 of their 30 points coming from in the paint. Erskine was the complete opposite with only six of its points coming from inside the lane.

GSW regained momentum in the second half when Alan Arnett drained a 3-point basket with 16:17 remaining to cap an 8-2 run and give the Hurricanes the lead. Southwestern would not trail again the rest of the night. The Hurricanes largest margin, six points, came with 3:01 to play when Brooks sank a pair of free throws to make the score 59-53.

Jamon Hawkins' two free throws with seven seconds remaining sealed the victory for the Hurricanes.

GSW shot 46.0 percent from the floor but struggled for the second-straight night from long range, finishing 23.1 percent (3 of 13) from beyond the arc. Erskine was held to 38.5 percent shooting overall and 28.6 (8 of 28) from 3-point range.

GSW controlled the rebounding battle (40-25) and bench points margin (18-2).

Daryl Davis was the top scorer for the Hurricanes with 15 points on 6 of 12 shooting. 

Erskine was led by Roderick Perkins' game-high 17 points. Mike Gabbard added 16 points and seven assists and Jake Haslam chipped in 11 points.

The Hurricanes travel to Fort Valley State on Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. game.
