'Canes Conquer Conquistadors, Off To Program-Best 7-0 Start

AMERICUS - Jamon Hawkins scored a game-high 22 points and Johathan Brooks posted his fifth double-double of the season with a 12-point, 13-rebound effort to help Georgia Southwestern remain undefeated and lead the Hurricanes to a 98-47 victory over Florida National University on Friday evening in the Storm Dome.

GSW improved its record to 7-0, which is marks the best start in program history since Southwestern joined the NCAA in 2006-07. Florida National dropped to 6-8.

It didn't take long for the Hurricanes to pull away from FNU. After Yves Goedschalk sank a pair of free throws for the Conquistadors to pull within a point at 6-5 with 16:12 left in the first half, GSW scored 16 unanswered points to kick off a 22-2 run.

The Hurricanes held a comfortable 20-point lead at the halftime break, 42-22. GSW connected on 17 of 21 shots (81 percent) from inside the arc over the opening 20 minutes of play and pulled down 14 more rebounds (25-11) than FNU.

In the second half, the Hurricanes loosened up from 3-point range and connected on 6 of 10 attempts from beyond the arc and eventually hit their largest lead of the game, a 51-point advantage, when Hawkins drained a 3-pointer to put GSW ahead 96-45.

Southwestern distributed the ball well over the final 20 minutes, picking up 10 assists. Derrick Dawkins led things at point guard and collected five over that span, while finishing with a career-high seven for the game.

Adrian Knight had a career night as well with 11 points and three steals. Knight made all four of his free throw attempts and tied his career high with four rebounds.

Hawkins led the offensive barrage by hitting 8 of 12 shots, including 4 of 7 from 3-point range. Hawkins added three steals and assists.

Josh Birchfield in his first full game back after an early-season shoulder injury was able to grab nine rebounds.

The Hurricanes connected on 59.7 percent of their shots in the game. FNU shot 37.7 percent overall. GSW grabbed 24 more rebounds (46-22) and had 28 more bench points (42-14).

The Hurricanes posted season-highs in steals (10) and 3-pointers (7).

Goedschalk and Quantavis Hall contributed 15 and 11 points, respectively, for the Conquistadors. Goedschalk added a team-high six rebounds.

Southwestern returns to the hardwood on Wednesday when it completes a home-and-home season series with Clark Atlanta at 7:30 p.m. in the Storm Dome.
