21st-Ranked Montevallo Holds Off GSW, 61-59

MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The Georgia Southwestern men's basketball team dropped a 61-59 decision to 21st-ranked University of Montevallo on Wednesday evening in Peach Belt Conference action.

The Hurricanes suffer a loss in consecutive games for the first time this season as their record falls to 12-3 overall and 4-2 in the PBC. Montevallo improves to 12-2 overall and 5-2 in PBC play.

The game was close throughout as there were 11 lead changes with the Hurricanes largest lead being two points and the Falcons stretching their advantage to no more than eight points early in the second half.

GSW trailed 27-25 at the break.

After trailing for the opening 13-plus minutes of the second half, a pair of free throws from Jamon Hawkins gave the Hurricanes a 48-46 lead with 6:09 remaining, but UM answered with a 10-2 run over the next four minutes.

Johathan Brooks made things interesting when he hit a 3-pointer for GSW with eight seconds remaining to pull the Hurricanes within a point, 59-58, but Shykeem Jackson sank a pair of free throws for Montevallo to bump the advantage back to three. The Falcons proceeded to foul Hawkins, who made the first attempt and intentionally missed the second, but Orlando Brazier snagged the final rebound for UM.

GSW's overall shooting percentage was under 40 percent for the second-straight game. After being held to 27.6 percent (8 of 29) in the first half, the Hurricanes improved to 52 percent over the final 20 minutes. The only problem was that UM warmed up in the second half too. The Falcons connected on 14 of 21 attempts (66.7 percent) in the final period.

After attempting a season-high 29 3-pointers against Francis Marion on Sunday, GSW fired their second-most attempts from beyond the arc in 2013-14 with 23 on Wednesday against the Falcons.

UM controlled the boards, holding GSW to a season-low 27 rebounds while pulling down 38. The Hurricane defense forced UM into three more turnovers (20-17) and blocked two more shots (4-2).

Hawkins led all scorers with 18 points. Alan Arnett added 15 and Brooks posted his ninth double-double of the season. The current PBC Player of the Week scored 13 points while pulling down 12 rebounds.

Brazier added a double-double for UM with a 14-point, 12-rebound effort. Troran Brown chipped in 13 points.

Southwestern returns home to host Flagler College on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
