GREENWOOD, S.C. - The Georgia Southwestern men's basketball team led for the first 38 minutes of Thursday's matchup with Lander University in Horne Arena only to have the host Bearcats snatch a victory away in the closing seconds and hand the Hurricanes a 62-58 road loss.

GSW sees its four-game winning streak snapped and falls to 16-4 overall and 8-3 in the Peach Belt Conference. Lander has won eight of its last nine games and improves to 13-6 overall and 7-3 in the PBC.

Although both sides struggled to score early in the ballgame, it was the Hurricanes who jumped out front to a 13-3 advantage. Lander managed to pull within three points on three different occasions over the final 10 minutes of the opening period but a 3-point play from Alan Arnett and a 3-point basket from Daryl Davis on the Hurricanes final two possessions of the half helped GSW take a 29-22 lead into the break.

GSW scored the first seven points of the second half to open a 14-point advantage, its largest of the night. A pair of Hurricane turnovers helped Lander answer quickly with six unanswered points in just over a minute. GSW responded with a jumper from Arnett and a 3-pointer from Jamon Hawkins to push the lead back to double digits with 13:55 remaining.

The Hurricane lead hit 11 points again after a jumper from Davis made the score 43-32 with 12:38 on the clock; but a 10-2 run for Lander over the ensuing four minutes brought the Bearcats within striking distance.

GSW managed to push the margin to seven, 49-42, with 5:44 to go but three costly turnovers down the stretch and four 3-point baskets by Lander paved the way for a Bearcats victory. Mario Pendarvis gave Lander its first lead of the night, 57-56, when he hit a 3-pointer with 1:06 remaining and JR Washington put the game out of reach with his bomb on the next Lander possession.

The Hurricanes were 1 of 9 at one point in the second half from beyond the arc and finished the period 2 of 11. Meanwhile, Lander hit three of its last four 3-point attempts and finished 6 of 12 in the second half.

Southwestern pulled down nine more rebounds (37-28) than the Bearcats but committed twice as many turnovers (16-8).

Davis picked up his third double-double of the season as he led Southwestern with 20 points behind 8 of 12 shooting and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds. Arnett scored nine of his 14 points in the second half. He added seven rebounds.

Darius Carrier connected on 9 of 12 field goals to lead Lander with 20 points. Michael Panaggio added 14 points and eight assists. Pendarvis scored all 13 of his points in the second half to aid the comeback.

GSW returns to Randolph Barksdale Court in the Storm Dome on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. for the 2014 Homecoming contest against Young Harris.
