Rudolph Guides GSW To Victory

AMERICUS - The Georgia Southwestern men's basketball team shot a blistering 70 percent from 3-point range, connecting on 14 of 20 attempts, en route to a 94-71 victory over Fort Valley State on Wednesday evening in the Storm Dome.

The Hurricanes improved their record to 4-2 while Fort Valley State dropped to 0-5.

GSW stumbled out of the gates against FVSU as the Wildcats opened a 10-4 lead in the opening minutes and proceeded to put the Hurricanes in their largest hole of the game, seven points, at 14-7 with 14:51 remaining in the first half. GSW answered with a 16-0 run, which surprisingly contained only a pair of 3-point baskets.

J.R. Bryant stopped the bleeding for FVSU with the Wildcats next four points to pull within 25-18, only to have the Hurricanes go on another run. This time GSW outscored FVSU, 10-2, capped by a Deric Rudolph 3-pointer to open a 15-point advantage. The Hurricanes maintained that margin over the final 4:43 of the period and when Rudolph sank a 3-pointer at the buzzer, GSW held a 47-32 lead heading into the halftime break.

FVSU scored the first five points of the second stanza to pull within 10 points at the 18:48 mark, but the Hurricanes allowed them no closer. Kevin Burnell kicked off a 13-4 run for GSW that included back-to-back 3-pointers from Damien Leonard.

Colin Slotter gave the Hurricanes their largest lead of the night when he dialed long distance with 3:02 to play and put GSW ahead by 26 points, 89-63.

Southwestern finished the evening with a better shooting percentage from beyond the 3-point arc (70 percent) than inside of it (56.25 percent). Fort Valley State grabbed one more rebound than GSW, 28-27, but turned the ball over six more times, 14-8.

Rudolph led all scorers with 24 points. He connected on 5 of 7 from beyond the arc and 8 of 10 shots overall. Darius Redding posted his second-straight double-double. This time Redding went the way of 10 points and 10 assists to become the first Hurricane since Maron Rivera during the 2011-12 season to dish out 10 or more assists in a game. Burnell was lights out from long range as well, connecting on all four of his attempts as part of his 16-point evening.

D'Areial Franklin led FVSU (0-5) with 15 points and seven rebounds. Bryant and Tyrone Brinson added 11 points apiece.

Southwestern returns to competition in 12 days (Dec. 15) when Middle Georgia State College comes to town for a 7:30 p.m. game.
