Far From Peachy; Early Conference Struggles Continue

FLORENCE, S.C. -- Detrek Browning was a perfect 5 of 5 from 3-point range and turned in a game-high 24 points to lead unbeaten Francis Marion University past Georgia Southwestern, 87-67, Sunday afternoon in the Smith University Center.

How It Happened: Francis Marion improved its record to 7-0 overall and 2-0 in the Peach Belt Conference by creating some early separation from the Hurricanes. Francis Marion went on a 17-5 run after the game had been tied at 4-4. GSW eventually pulled to within seven points, 26-19, when Hassan Buggs tipped in a bucket with 7:08 left before halftime. That's as close as the Hurricanes could get. GSW trailed 42-29 at the break and trailed by as many as 29 points late in the second half.

GSW dipped to 0-2 in Peach Belt play and 4-2 overall after struggling from long range and failing to force turnovers. The Hurricanes finished 5 of 22 from 3-point range and the six turnovers by Francis Marion was the fewest by an opponent this season. GSW had forced at least 10 in each of its other five games.

The Hurricanes outrebounded Francis Marion, 36-31, but the Patriots dished out nine more assists (22-13) and sank seven more 3-pointers (12-5).

Who Stood Out: Devin Watson scored in double figures for the fifth consecutive game and led the Hurricanes with 16 points. Hasaan Buggs added 15 points and pulled down a team-high seven rebounds. Quenten Taylor connected on 6 of 10 shots en route to his 14 points and dished out a game-high six assists.

Up Next:  GSW travels to UNC Pembroke on Tuesday for the final game of a three-game road trip. Tipoff is scheduled for 10 a.m.
