All-PBC Selections Griffin And Gahman Lead GSW To Regionals

AMERICUS - For the second-straight year, the Georgia Southwestern men's golf team has earned an invitation to participate in the NCAA postseason.

GSW will join four other Peach Belt Conference programs at the upcoming NCAA Division II South/Southeast Regional in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. The Blue & Gold, currently ranked 22nd in the country, will join No. 3 USC Aiken, No. 9 Columbus State, No. 14 Armstrong and No. 15 Georgia College as PBC members competing in the NCAA's regional play.

The regional, which consists of 10 teams each from both the South and Southeast regions, will take place Monday, May 6 through Wednesday, May 8. The event will be contested at the par-72, 6,928-yard El Campeon golf course at Mission Inn Resort & Club and is being co-hosted by the Sunshine State Conference and the Central Florida Sports Commission.

First-year head coach Darcy Donaldson finds his squad in a very competitive regional. The South/Southeast portion of the tournament bracket finds seven of the top 10 programs in the country, including No. 1 Nova Southeastern and No. 2 Barry. The three-day, 54-hole regional will feature one round each day. Action will get underway at 7:30 a.m. each day.

The Hurricanes had another outstanding year as the team took home numerous awards. These accolades were highlighted by the team garnering two of the eight All-Conference First Team selections. Seniors J.P. Griffin and Nate Gahman brought home the honors. Matthew Whittaker was named to the  All-PBC Tournament Team as he led the Hurricanes at the conference championships.

GSW saved its best golf for the spring season as the squad captured the 17-team Spring Kickoff Intercollegiate hosted by Lincoln Memorial University & Wingate University Feb. 11-12 in Fleming Island, Fla. A few weeks later, the 'Canes finished third at the 18-team Bearcat Invitational hosted by Lander University in Greenwood, S.C. Southwestern closed out the regular season with its best showing in school history at the Peach Belt Conference Championships as the Hurricanes finished in fourth place at the 11-team event.

Griffin, a three-time PBC Golfer of the Week, earned his second All-Conference selection. The Glennville native has finished under par in five of his 27 rounds in 2012-13, including a pair of 3-under 69s. Griffin was a PING All-America Third Team member last spring.

Gahman also earned his second All-Conference honor after being named to the squad in 2010-11. The Leesburg native currently ranks fifth in the PBC in scoring average at 73.6 through 27 rounds in 2012-13.

GSW is just one of 80 teams participating in the NCAA Tournament, but they will look to finish in the top seven of the twenty teams in the regional in order to qualify for the finals, May 20–24 in Hershey, Pa.
