COLUMBUS - Georgia Southwestern graduate Nate Gahman finished in a tie for 10th place on Sunday at the prestigious Southeastern Amateur tournament on the par-71 Donald Ross course at the the Country Club of Columbus.

Participating players had to fill out an application and be accepted into the 96-player field or earn a spot through a qualifying event on Tuesday. Gahman was included in the field prior to the qualifier.

The format was 72 holes of stroke play over a four-day event. Round 1 was played on Wednesday. The field was cut to the low 60 and ties and anyone within 10 shots of the lead after 54 holes.

Gahman shook off a bogey on the first hole of this tournament - his only hole over par on Wednesday - to finish with an opening-round 2-under 69.

An eagle on the first hole Thursday quickly pushed Gahman to 4-under. He added a birdie on No. 3 and sat at a personal-low 5-under through 21 holes. Struggles down the stretch pushed Gahman to 2-over for the round and even par overall.

Gahman added a 1-under round of 70 on Saturday and a 71 on Sunday to finish with an even-par 284 total.

Seth Reeves from Duluth won the tournament with an 11-under 273.

The Southeastern Amateur was created in 1922 by Fred Haskins who was recommended by, and later encouraged to entertain the offer by, Robert Tyre Jones (Bobby Jones).

Since that time, the Southeastern has been held in both match-play and stroke-play formats.

Past winners include PGA players Doug Sanders,Danny Edwards, Curtis Strange, Kenny Knox, and Allen Doyle. Included on the runner-up list are Gary Koch, Ben Crenshaw, Fuzzy Zoeller, Andy Bean, Willy Wood, and Paul Azinger. Aaron, Crenshaw, and Zoeller wear the green jacket of a Masters Champion, and Doyle launched into his senior tour career shortly after winning his fifth Southeastern, where he has won the Senior U.S. Open twice.

Gahman also qualifed for the Georgia Amateur Championship at Pinetree Country Club in Kennesaw July 11-14.

On Tuesday the Leesburg native received more accolades for his accomplishments during the 2012-13 season as he received an honorable mention for the NCAA Division II PING All-America team.

Gahman ended the year second in the Peach Belt Conference with a 73.6 scoring average. He posted four top-10 finishes in 12 events. Of the 33 rounds played in 2012-13, he finished under par 10 times with a season-low round of 3-under 69 coming in the second round of the PBC Tournament.

LETHBRIDGE, Alberta - Georgia Southwestern golfer Matthew Whittaker won the three-round Chinook Classic.

Whittaker shot rounds of 72, 67 and 71 to win the event held May 18-20.

The Lethbridge native is preparing for his senior season with the Hurricanes.


PEACHTREE CITY - Former Georgia Southwestern standout J.P. Griffin placed 13th in his professional debut at the Hopkins Golf Peach State Pro Tour's Planterra Ridge Classic at the Planterra Ridge Golf Club on Wednesday.

Griffin bogeyed the first hole of his professional career and fell to 3-over through the front nine. But Griffin responded, sinking birdies on three of his first four holes on the back nine to pull back to even. A bogey on No. 17 landed him at 1-over for the day with a round of 73.

Griffin was determined to conquer the opening holes on Day 2 and he did just that with four-consecutive birdies coming over holes 2-5. The Glennville native finished the final round with a 3-under 69 to end the tournament with a 2-under 142 overall.

Wade Binfield won the event with a 13-under 131.

Griffin was a stroke away from earning a prize payout.
