Record Breaking Season For GSW Golf

AMERICUS, Ga.- The 2014-15 season for the Georgia Southwestern men's golf team not only ended with their third appearance in four years at the NCAA South/Southeast Regional tournament, but with considerable achievements including a few broken records.

The Hurricanes captured second place at four tournaments this season and finished ninth at the NCAA South/Southeast Regional championship making this season the most successful placement wise for head coach Darcy Donaldson.

The competing team consisted of senior Chris Low of North Berwick, Scotland; junior Hayes Dupree from Mohave Valley, Ariz.; junior Anders Olsson from Smyrna, Ga.; sophomore Fraser Johnston from Port Seton, Scotland and sophomore Nicholas Ward from Eastbourne, England.

The other team members include senior Peter Jungsun Lee of Americus, Ga. and junior Kyle Cameron from Newnan, Ga.

This season the team broke the lowest team scoring average in GSW history with 294.70; the previous was 295.50 held by the 2011-2012 team.

Another GSW record was broken when Low set the lowest career scoring average with 73.47; the previous was held by Craig Gibson with a 73.89 average.

Ward set the second lowest individual season scoring average with 72.90 right behind Craig Gibson with a 72.74 set back in the 2011-2012 season.

In the Fall Low tied the all-time 54-Hole scoring record at 209 (68-71-70) which was set by Andrew Ritchot in 2012-2013 (74-68-67).

Low also captured the Peach belt Conference Player of the Week on Oct. 9, 2014 after he advanced to a playoff for the individual title and tied for first at the North Georgia Fall Invitational.

Low joined teammate Ward in being named to the 2nd Team All-Conference at the PBC Championship banquet as well.

Despite climbing two spots during play the third round, GSW finished eighth in the PBC Championships after the third round was washed out and the score cards were nullified.

The men still played tremendous golf during the season to get a bid into the NCAA Division II South/ Southeast Regional tournament where they faced their toughest competition of the season. The Hurricanes played 18 of the top 26 teams in DII, the other eight teams were spread out throughout the other three DII Regional tournaments.

With all the hard work, success and accomplishments from this years GSW golf team they came out ranked 17th in the final Bushnell Golfweek Division II Coaches Poll that came out Friday. The Hurricanes have been in the top 25 in every poll since Nov.

The Hurricanes only lose one member of the top five, Chris Low. Coach Donaldson is bringing in some new talent for next year that will mix well with the skill of the veterans coming back.

GSW is looking to head back to the NCAA DII Regionals and make their way towards Nationals in their 2015-16 season.

In the upcoming weeks the men should find out who has made All-American, All-American Scholar, All-Academic Team and/or All-South East Region Team.
