Nationally Ranked Hurricanes Head To NCAA DII Regionals

AMERICUS, Ga.- The No. 16 Georgia Southwestern men's golf team received an at-large berth to the NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championships May 2-4 at the Mission Inn Resort and Club in the Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.

The Hurricanes earned the No. 5 seed out of the Southeast Region on Friday when the NCAA announced the field of 80 teams and 32 student-athletes competing as individuals that have been selected to participate in regional competition.

GSW will play in the toughest field of the four regional tournaments. The South/Southeast Region has 15 of the Top-25 team ranked in the recent Bushnell Golfweek Division II Coaches Poll, the other ten teams are spread out through three other regions.

The 'Canes are one of six Peach Belt Conference teams competing for a spot at the finals, the other five being No. 11 USC Aiken, No. 12 Flagler College, No. 19 Columbus State, Young Harris and Lander University.

The remaining four teams in the Southeast field are Carson-Newman and Lincoln Memorial from the South Atlantic Conference and Limestone College and North Greenville from Conference Carolinas.

The South Region consist of the eight ranked team, seven of which are in the Top-10; No. 2 Lynn, No. 3 Florida Southern, No. 4 St. Leo, No. 5 West Florida, No. 6 Nova Southern, No. 7 Barry, No 8. Lee and No. 17 West Georgia. The other two South Region teams are North Alabama and Miles College.

The top five teams and the top two student-athletes not with a team from each regional (regardless of region) will advance to the finals May 17-21, at Green Valley Ranch in Denver, Colorado hosted by Metropolitan State University of Denver.

Last year the Hurricanes finished ninth overall and placed second amongst all the Peach Belt teams competing, only 12 strokes behind USC Aiken who finished third. GSW also finished second of all the DII schools from the state of Georgia by only one stroke. Nova Southeastern took the team title by 10 strokes.

Hayes Dupree and Nicholas Ward both tied for 18th with a three-round score of 218. Chris Low posted a 224 to tie for 29th, Anders Olsson finished tied for 74th with a 232 and Fraser Johnston shot a 236 to tie for 89th.
