DEARBORN, Mich. -- The ninth-ranked Georgia Southwestern men's golf team posted a 10-over-par 298 in the opening round of the 2022 NCAA Division II National Championship at TPC Michigan on Monday to finish the day in sixth place out of 20 teams.

The Hurricanes are 10 shots behind the tournament leader, No. 25 University of Indianapolis. 

Nicholas Escobar and Simon Estrada led the way for GSW with 1-over-par 73 scores on the 7,056-yard course. The duo is tied for 13th place out of 108 golfers, four strokes off the lead. Escobar drained four birdies during his round, with three coming on the back nine, but a pair of double bogeys knocked his score over par. Estrada played near even par throughout the round with one birdie and two bogeys over his 18 holes.

Jack Tharrington carded a 75 to tie for 33rd. Erik Fogel is two strokes back of Tharrington. Chase McLain shot an 80. 

The Hurricanes will tee off the second round on Tuesday starting at 12:05 p.m.

The top eight teams after the third round will be seeded and advance to match play beginning on Thursday to decide a national champion.
