ALBANY, Ga. — The 10th-ranked Georgia Southwestern men's golf team posted its best round of the week and led the field with a 10-under-par 278 in the final round of the Hurricane Invitational on Tuesday to climb four spots in the standings and finish third overall out of 17 teams. The tournament, hosted by GSW, was played at the par-72, 7,024-yard Doublegate Country Club and featured seven programs ranked in the top 25 of NCAA Division II according to the latest Golfstat computer rankings, including the No. 1 team in the country.
Eric Fogel led the Hurricanes with a 67 in Round 3 and climbed 21 spots on the leaderboard as he birdied three holes on the front nine and four on the back nine. Fogel tied for sixth in the 90-player field with a 3-under 213 overall. Payne Sells fired a 1-under in the final round and finished a stroke back of Fogel overall at 2-under to have a top 10 finish. Nicolas Escobar played the final round a 2-under and finished at even par for the tournament to tie for 22nd overall with a score of 216. Chase McLain finished with a 2-over-par 218 to tie for 28th and Jack Tharrington tied for 46th with a 222.
No. 6 North Georgia defended its title and won for the second consecutive year. The Nighthawks finished with a five-shot lead over No. 8 Nova Southeastern. GSW ended up six shots off the pace, but seven strokes ahead of the top-ranked team coming in, Anderson (S.C.). Reece Coleman from Anderson won the individual title with a 7-under overall, a stroke ahead of the pack.
The Hurricanes are off until March 13 when they travel to Kinderlou Forest Golf Club for the Southeastern Collegiate hosted by Valdosta State.
