WARREN, Ohio — The eighth-ranked Georgia Southwestern men's golf team posted a 5-over 293 in the opening round of the NCAA Division II National Championship Monday at the par 72 7,287-yard Avalon Lakes Golf Course. GSW finished the day in eighth place out of 20 teams. The Hurricanes had two players in the Top 20 of the 108-player field. 

Chase McLain led the Hurricanes on Day 1 with a 2-under par 72 to sit at 14th. McLain birdied three holes on the front nine and birdied one hole on the back nine. He hit an eagle on his 14th hole. A bogey on his 18th hole dropped him back to 2-under. 

Erik Fogel ended the day even par 72 tieing for 22nd. Fogel birdied two hole on the front nine and two holes on the back nine. Fogel was at 2-under until a double-bogey on his final hole he ended the day at even par. 

Payne Sells ended the day 3-over. Sells birdied on his sixth hole he also birdied two holes int he back nine. Sells had a much better performance on the back nine he shot a 1-under but a tough front nine put hime at 3-over on the day.

Jack Tharrington pared two of his first three he birdied his fifth hole. A bogey on his sixth hole put him at 2-over at the end of the front nine. Tharrington ran into trouble in the back nine he hit bogeys on three holes but a birdie on his 16th hole kept him at 2-over for the day and sitting tied at 51st.
