WARREN, Ohio — The eighth-ranked Georgia Southwestern men's golf team posted a 3-under 285 in the second round of the NCAA Division II National Championships Tuesday at the par-72 7,287-yard Avalon Lakes Golf Course. GSW finished the day in fourth place out of 20 teams. The Hurricanes had two players in the Top 20 of the 108-player field.
Chase McLain tied on Day 2 with a 2-under par 70 to sit at seventh. McLain birdied two holes on the front nine and birdied one hole on the back nine ending his day at 2-under.
Erik Fogel also shot a 2-under par 70 tying for 12th. Fogel struggled in the front nine he shot three bogeys he was much better on the back nine he birdied two consecutive holes and also birdied his 14th hole.
Payne Sells ended the day even par 72. Sells birdied two holes in the front nine and birdied two holes in the back ninth. Sells almost finished 4-under but a triple-bogey on his seventeenth and a bogey on his 18th moved him to even on the day.
Jack Tharrington had a great front nine he birdied four holes. Tharrington ran into trouble in the back nine he hit bogeys on three holes and he ended the day 1-over par tied 54th.
GSW tee times begin at 12:16 p.m. for the final round on Wednesday. The top eight teams advance to medal match play on Thursday.
