Late Rally Not Enough For Canes

The Georgia Southwestern men's soccer team lost 2-1 to West Florida on Monday afternoon at Hurricane Field.  Freshman Jamie Kiep scored his first goal of the season and the lone goal for the 'Canes off an assist from junior Michael Moses.

The two teams were scoreless until the 58th minute when Paul Willoughby scored his first goal of the year for West Florida (3-0-1) from just outside the box.

The visiting Argonauts struck again six minutes later when Christian Cabral dribbled through the Hurricane defense and scored his first goal of 2008 from 10 yards out.

GSW cut the lead in half at the 87:12 mark when Moses found Kiep up the middle for the score from eight yards away.

The late pressure from GSW wasn't enough and for a second straight game 2-1 was the final.  All six goals over the two-game span have come in the second half.

Sophomore John Scharnikow had six saves for GSW. David McNally stopped one for West Florida. The Argonauts outshot GSW 18-3 and led 8-1 in corner kicks.

With the loss, the Hurricanes finish their season-opening homestand 0-4. GSW hits road for the first time in 2008 and is at St. Leo on Friday for a 7 p.m. match.
