Fracis Marion University sophomore Ivan Juric broke up a scoreless match with a 61st minute goal and FMU added another score seven minutes later as the Patriots defeated GSW 2-0, Saturday afternoon in the Hurricanes Peach Belt Conference opener.
Juric scored his team-leading fourth goal at 60:01 to put FMU
(3-4-2, 1-0-1) ahead 1-0. The score followed a failed
clearance by a Hurricane defender and Juric battled for the ball in
the box and eventually scored the unassisted goal from five yards
out.
The margin increased to 2-0 at the 68:34 mark. Junior Jared
Beauchamp scored on an 8-yard shot from the right side following a
cross by freshman Adrian Sikorski and a touch pass from freshman
Emerson Peredo.
Although the first half was scoreless, both sides had opportunities
to change the scoreboard. Georgia Southwestern State's Derek
Schicker took a cross from Jesse Davis in the 28th minute and saw
his point-blank 3-yard shot turned away by a diving Richeson.
Two minutes later, Beauchamp watched his bending shot from the
right side curve outside the left post.
Following an FMU corner kick in the 42nd minute, Patriot freshman
Sawyer Frank had two attempts at scoring from within 10 yards, with
his first shot being cleared off the goal line by a Georgia
Southwestern State defender and his second shot grabbed by freshman
goalkeeper Michael Smith.
Francis Marion outshot the Hurricanes 17-9 and led 4-2 in corner
kicks. Richeson finished with five saves, while Smith
registered seven stops.
GSW drops to 1-9-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the Peach Belt. The Hurricanes visit Lander on Saturday, Oct. 4 for a 3:30 p.m. match.
