After coming back from a two-goal deficit, the Georgia Southwestern men's soccer team surrendered a goal with one second remaining in double overtime to fall 3-2 to Spring Hill College Saturday afternoon at Hurricane Field on Senior Day.
The Hurricanes fell behind early as Bryce Privett put Spring Hill on the board at the 8:16 mark off a free kick from just outside the box.
It remained a one goal game until the 64th minute when Privett fed Andy Poveda to give Spring Hill a 2-0 advantage.
The Hurricanes responded with a pair of goals over the final 17 minutes of regulation. Senior Jesse Davis cut the lead to one at the 73:04 mark and fellow senior Michael Moses converted a penalty kick to tie the contest in the 88th minute.
While GSW outshot Spring Hill 3-1 in the first overtime, the momentum shifted to the visitors in the second extra session and SHC held a 3-1 advantage.
With a little over 20 seconds remaining GSW deflected the ball over their own end line, setting up a flurry of events that led to the game-winner. The Badgers first attempt to score came from the right corner with 10 seconds remaining. The kick was instantly knocked back over the end line by Southwestern in the general direction of the corner. Privett regained control of the ball for Spring Hill and placed it down with four ticks remaining on the clock. The low, hard kick that followed skimmed across the first line of defense and found teammate Ryan Burns just outside the left post. Burns drilled the shot into the back of the net before time expired.
Spring Hill finished with a 14-12 shots advantage and a 7-5 edge in corner kicks. GSW goalkeeper David Porley saved four for the Hurricanes and, in the process, broke the school individual record for saves in a season with 89. The previous high was 88 set in 2006 by Conrad Brown. Cory Bronenkamp stopped five for Spring Hill.
GSW seniors Davis, Moses and Derek Schicker were recognized before the match.
The Hurricanes finish the 2009 season 2-16 overall and 0-8 in the PBC.
