AMERICUS, Ga. – The end of August means the beginning of official Hurricane action. Starting on Thursday the Georgia Southwestern men's and women's soccer teams will kick off the athletic year with four road matches in three days throughout the state of Georgia. We've got your preview tidbits for each and all of the matches.

Thursday September 1st, 2011

GSW Women's Soccer at Valdosta State University (7 p.m.)

Valdosta Athletic Field House – Valdosta, Georgia

The 'Canes are returning 13 letter winners from a year ago including seven starters. The Blue & Gold have only won two of their seven all-time season openers, which includes a 1-1 record in season openers under Head Coach Tony Economopoulos. This match-up will be the first between the two programs.

Coach Economopoulos and company kick off the 2011 season with an inter-state showdown with the Lady Blazers of the Gulf South Conference. VSU will be looking to christen their new Valdosta Athletic Field House facility with its first win.

GSW Men's Soccer versus Southeastern University (Fla.) (3 p.m.)

Brewton Parker College Soccer Field – Mt. Vernon, Georgia 

A day after the Lady 'Canes kick off the action; it will be the men's turn to start their season. The Hurricanes will be taking on Southeastern for the second time ever with the Fire taking home the victory in the only previous meeting. Southeastern, a member of the Sun Conference, went 6-10 last season.

Coach Russ returns five starters and eight other letter winners from last year's squad. They will be looking to earn the second season opening victory in the NCAA Division II era at Georgia Southwestern.

GSW Men's Soccer versus Johnson & Wales (3 p.m.)

Brewton Parker College Soccer Field – Mt. Vernon, Georgia 

The second game of the men's back-to-back will feature the first ever matchup between Georgia Southwestern and Johnson & Wales University. The Wildcats, also a member of the Sun Conference, went 1-15 during the 2010 season.

 

GSW Women's Soccer versus Queens University (N.C.) (7 p.m.)

Valdosta Athletic Field House – Valdosta, Georgia 

The Lady 'Canes will take on the Royals of Queens University for their second match in three days. The Royals are coming off a 2010 season that saw them record ten wins with eight losses as a member of the Conference Carolinas. This game will mark the first-ever matchup between the two programs, and Queens has not won a season opener since they beat Wingate University to open the 2007 season.
