Saints march away with GSW conference opener

AMERICUS, Ga. – After losing their home debut to Florida Tech, the Georgia Southwestern men's soccer team was looking to take a step forward. Peach Belt conference play for the Georgia Southwestern Hurricanes, however, got off to a misstep after the Blue & Gold lost to Flagler College 3-0.

The Saints got on the board early when senior Johan Bergfield gathered the pass from teammate Pol Berenguer and sent the shot in to the far post in the fifth minute of play.

The Hurricanes threatened with a handful of headers from sophomore forward Ryan Wakenigg in the minutes after Flagler College's first goal. However, none of the forward's attacks were able to provide an equalizer.

The Saints would register their second goal in the final minute of the first half after junior Joseph Toby flicked a ball backwards to senior Mack Hough whose left footer gave Flager the 2-0 half time lead.

The Blue & Gold threatened in the second half starting with senior Shane McKay ripping a bending shot from twenty yards, which forced Flagler keeper Camp Bissell to make a diving save. Later, a header from senior Linley Laverdure was blocked at the edge of the box.

Senior Mack Hough would tack on another goal for Flagler on Pol Berenguer's second assist of the game to give Flagler the 3-0 win.

The loss puts the Hurricanes' record to 2-2-0 on the season and 0-1-0 in the Peach Belt Conference. GSW will look to rebound as they travel to Alabama-Huntsville on Saturday for a 3:00 showdown with the Chargers.
