Hurricanes weathered by Thomas University

LITHONIA, Ga. - Coming off their Sunday loss to Florida Memorial, the Georgia Southwestern men's soccer team was looking to get back to their scoring ways. However, they would be unable to muster a scoring attack nor corral the Thomas University scoring attack. The Night Hawks would put up five goals on the way to a 5-0 shutout of GSW on Wednesday night.

The Night Hawks would score early and often. Thomas got on the board within six minutes of the match beginning when Diego Hurtado gathered a rebound of a shot that had deflected off the crossbar. The forward angled a pass to teammate Jean Vega who scored from eight yards out.

GSW was unable to register a shot on goal in the game's opening half, but would go into the half only down 1-0.

The scoring pace would pick up for the Night Hawks on their way to tallying four second half goals. Nathan Would would find Rowan Liburd off a free kick for a goal in the 58th minute, and then Liburd would score again 16 minutes later on the forward's attack from the right side of the GSW defense.

The most promising scoring chance for the Blue & Gold came in the 74th minute. A sprinting Ross Sellers found space to operate on the right edge of the box after getting by a Night Hawk defender. His shot was blocked by keeper Andi Hoffer and it rebounded back to the same right corner where freshman Hunter Sams would shoot again. Hoffer would save both shots in a matter of seconds.

Thomas University would tack on another goal in the final minute of the game off the foot of Jessie Bathelt.

The Hurricanes fall to a mark of 2-5-1 on the season. The Blue & Gold will be on the road again for their next match on Saturday. They will play as part of a double header with the GSW women at UNC Pembroke. The women will face the Braves at 1:00 pm followed by the men at 3:30 pm.
